After analyzing someone else's track the students were given a drum kit app for their iPads, a digital recorder and a list of different types of sounds they need to find. With recorders in hand students spread across campus, banging on anything they could find that sounded like the types of percussion sounds found in a drum kit.
Back in the classroom the sounds were edited and equalized to bring out the best of each sound using a free wav editor called Audacity. Then these sounds were assigned to a new drum kit in Garageband and then composed into beats and rhythms. These were then arranged into complete tracks. Finally cover art was created.
All of the songs created in the project are playable below. There were some great results with a lot of experimentation. Keep in mind that all sounds used for these compositions were recorded by the students themselves.
